as long as it works with ur carrier u just cant buy any phone and it work it has to be compatiable with the service. but u dont have to sign a new 2 yr just for buy a phone u can pay full retail for it at the store and just put it on ur service…but the full retail is usually very expensive.

The cool thing is you can get phones that aren't available through any carriers, and a lot of them have way better features. I have a SonyEricsson K790a I got directly from SE and I love it!
Be careful about getting phones on eBay…make sure that if it is not a phone that was originally sold by your provider it is unlocked so you can put your sim card in it.
