Cell phones in Hong Kong- A bane in disguise?
Hong Kong is ringing its way to a one of the most densely cellular places on the planet. Yes, the recent statistics published by Hong Kong Office of the Telecommunications Authority indicate exorbitant usage of local mobile data upto 147 Terabytes as of January 2009.
Hong Kong Salary trends show that the effect of economic crisis is lesser compared to the other parts of Asia. This could be a reason why the number of Hong Kong mobile phone users is 11.43 million, representing a mind blowing penetration rate of over 163%. Some techno addiction that! 95 % of Hong Kong consumers possess atleast one mobile phone today.
Yet, all things need a limit. There is a whole new experience with people talking over the cell phone loudly, be it a hospital, movie or ridiculously so, even in the library!. Despite signs being used to indicate low levels of noise, celll phone addicts seem to ignore it!Disturbance levels are on an ascent.
Amidst all the disturbance and frusration, coupled with the endless ringing of phones, the Office of Telecommunications has come up with an antidote, mobile-phone-jamming systems!
Possibly realising the prospective retaliations from angry customers, officials in the telecommunactions office are carrying out a public consultation before deciding on the cell-phone-jamming plan.
Some suggest allocating buffer areas in places like the corridors outside cinema halls so that people can attend to urgent and important calls. The phone mania seems to have hit schools and colleges as well. In retribution, the Education, Science and Technology Ministry issued a notice calling on primary and middle schools to prohibit students from bringing cell phones to school.
At this stage when Telecommunication industry is on the uprise, helping in the growth of Hong kogn, i wonder if this form of ‘taking to task’ is the right way to combat cell phone fixation!

why don't you take a family plan. if you want to be able to get signal almost anywhere, try Verizon or At&t cingular.
Try MyRatePlan. At the source link below, you can compare single, family and/or prepaid plans.
You generally won't find discount codes for rate plans, although some corporations have discounts with specific carrier(s). Usually these come in the form of a percentage (e.g., 15%) off your monthly bill.
Here's a simple example. I'm going to ignore text messaging and mobile web prices because I don't know how complicated you want it to be.
I'm just going to assume there is a monthly charge (no matter how many minutes you use) and a charge per minute for the amount of minutes that you go over your allowed minutes.
Let's say plan A is 39.99/month for 500 minutes, and then it is $0.65 per minute after you use the 500 minutes.
Let's say plan B is $34.99/month for 450 minutes, and then it is $0.60 per minute after the 450 minutes.
Let x = number of minutes you use each month.
The cost of plan A would be
C = 39.99 if you use less than 500 minutes or
C = 39.99 + 0.65(x-500) if you use 500 minutes or more.
The cost of plan B would be
C = 34.99 if you use less than 450 minutes or
C = 34.99 + 0.60(x-450) if you use more than 450 minutes.
Right away you can see that Plan B is cheaper if you don't use more than 450 minutes.
You can find when the plans cost the same amount by setting the cost of each plan equal to each other.
39.99 + 0.65(x-500) = 34.99 +0.60(x-450)
Then solve for x.
