There's no nationwide directory of cell phone numbers. Each provider maintains list of its clients, but they do not open this information to the public. Since cell phone market was finally somewhat deregulated and now customers are allowed to switch carriers and still keep their existing numbers it is hard to guess which provider serves the given number.
If you have a legitimate purpose you can contact cell phone providers and try to find out which copany owns the number first and then work with this provider to get more details.
Another option is to search for the number in different search engines (Google, MSN) and see if this number comes up in the search as some people leave their phone numbers all over the Internet.

whitepages won't let you track cell phone numbers. They will let you trace only listed phone numbers.

Cell phone information is not private and if you were able to use a service you could in fact find out who is texting you all the time. My daughter was getting all kinds of crank calls and I used an online service and was able to put a stop to the calls. So if you can get a credit card to use it is very much worth it.

contact the police FIRST. they can then contact the service provider and speak with their (your carrier or sprint's) law enforcement division. save your texts by either locking them in your phone or sending them to an email address. the officer working the case can then get back to you and tell you how the problem has been resolved.
